Be a language partner
Whether you are learning a new language
or you simply enjoy learning about international people and cultures,
you can volunteer as a language partner. Volunteers help MESLS students
practice English conversation 50% of the time, then spend equal time
on the other language (e.g. Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, or
Thai). Language partners usually meet for one to two hours each week,
perhaps in a coffee shop or bookstore, or while sightseeing and chatting
at one of the many Madison attractions. Many of our students make new
friends in this way, and become familiar with American life. For our
volunteers, the language partner program may be a rare opportunity to
practice a second language with a native speaker, and a chance to become
more familiar with a new culture. To apply, send e-mail to Linda at
language@mesls.org.
Be a tutor or teach a free class
Volunteers who have language teaching
experience or who are teachers-in-training can volunteer to work with
a MESLS student one-on-one as a tutor or with a small group of students
as the teacher of a free conversation class. MESLS students who are
paired with tutors have usually been referred to the volunteer coordinator
by instructors who are concerned about a student's academic difficulties
and/or lack of progress with grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation.
Volunteers receive suggestions from the MESLS staff and have access
to teaching materials. They may help students with supplemental work
aside from the regular homework assignments, memorization of new vocabulary,
pronunciation of English sounds, and cultural adaptation. Volunteers
who teach the free conversation classes play language games, study excerpts
of movies, engage students in conversation and songs, and generally
have a good time helping the students become more comfortable with English.
To apply, send e-mail to Linda at language@mesls.org.
Open your home to an international
student
Homestay families provide a private
bedroom and a specific number of meals a week for international students.
MESLS students are paired with Madison families after carefully checking
the preferences of both. Both the American families and the students
receive great benefits from the cultural exchange. The families receive
payment to cover the costs of meals and utilities; charges are determined
by the needs of the family. For more information, e-mail Barbara at
advisor@mesls.org.
