The Big Job Sites

You’ll find these sites listed on most other international job hunting guides. And for good reason: they are among the best and most comprehensive sites for searching and accessing information on working abroad. These pages offer more than just position listings - they also contain a considerable number of informative articles and guides. Thus, each is worth a browse.

Though not everything can be done -- or ought to be expected of -- online! Take a look at the article from the New York Times (15 January 2006): More Jobs Being Found Online, but That Doesn’t Mean It’s Easy.

Escape Artist - commercial

This is an exceptionally busy page with lots and lots of links and a not very friendly search capability. Organization leaves something to be desired. Well worth a close look, though. Positions can be browsed starting on the Jobs Overseas page, where links to sites with purported openings are broken down by region, country, field of interest, type of position, etc. An alternative job search page can be found by clicking to the International Jobs Marketplace. Confused? Click on the latter and browse.

Idealist.org - non-profit

A lot to offer in terms of job, internship and volunteer postings, and search capability. Your best bet is to start at the home page and then select the link in the “Advanced Searches” menu that runs down the right-hand side of the page. Although the site offers “Resources for...” links, these simply redirect you to the search pages. Registration allows you to sign up for an “agent” which will monitor postings based on criteria you provide.

Monster.com - commercial

The job site everyone seems to know. Coverage is worldwide. The Work Abroad home page is perhaps the best place to start. Allows you to make a basic search of listed positions, and offers links to a number of articles relevant to the international job search. Access to the general Career Advice pages is free but there’s little of international relevance, no search capability, and little useful structure. With registration you can get a MyMonster “agent” which will monitor postings for positions that match the criteria you set. Additional articles and links of interest can be found on the site’s Work Abroad Links page.

Monster.com has also launched a Global Gateway shortcut, allowing you to select from a limited list of destinations and subsequently directing you to jobs available there.

Riley Guide - private/non-profit

This webpage is one of the most frequently linked to general job search sites. It has some specifically international content, notably the International Job Opportunities and International Info: Living & Working Overseas pages. Both offer collections of helpfully annotated links. We recommend that you visit Executing Your Job Search Campaign, too, as it provides substantial and helpful general information and guidance on conducting your job search.

Transitions Abroad - commercial/publication

Click above to link to Transition Abroad’s work abroad page. There is a lot of really useful information, notably articles detailing the intricacies of working abroad and lists of organizations offering or coordinating short-term work. Organization of opportunities isn’t great, so browse carefully.
