Commercial Sites

Many sites that announce international job listings are of limited utility. The major flaw usually is limited opportunities. This may reflect the broader trends of the market (limited jobs available), a site’s particular listing strategy (employers pay for postings), or the age of the listings themselves. It is always good to do a broadly-defined test search to begin: search for “all opportunities” in all locations if possible. If only one or two results are returned than you probably aren’t going to have much luck at that site.

And remember: not everything can be done -- or ought to be expected of -- online! Take a look at the article from the New York Times (15 January 2006): More Jobs Being Found Online, but That Doesn’t Mean It’s Easy.

4 International Careers & Jobs

“Leading world-wide directory of quality job sites and career resources and a free starting point for international job seekers, employers and recruiters. 4icj.com covers 190 countries and includes about 800 selected job sites and career resources classified according to 18 categories.”

Provides access to a host of resources as well as links. The organizational structure of the site itself is many-layered and not the easiest to navigate. Worth browsing - allow yourself time to follow many links, though also many dead-ends.

Alliance Abroad Group

Offers a host of work, travel, trainee, and seasonal programs to students, recent graduates, and others. Program fees vary.

Bloomberg Careers

Browsable database accessible for free (click on the Job Search option). Nifty interface allows you to search by single or multiple regions and type of position/s. Selecting on a listed position allows you to complete an online form by way of application as well as submitting your resume (have it prepared beforehand!) electronically.

CampusCareerCenter.com

Searchable database accessible with free, albeit lengthy, registration. International opportunities are limited. You can access a number of short articles about working abroad, the employment situation and experience in particular countries and other international topics in the Foreign Exchange section of the site, which is accessible without registration.

CareerExchange.com

Very limited but wide-ranging (type and location) postings freely accessible. No contact information provided in listing so you must register to apply on-line. Not exclusively an international site. Search and browse capabilities are very limited - keep your search terms as broad as possible: system requires you enter a keyword to search listings - make sure it’s a very common word such as “the”, “a” or “to” . You are unlikely to get any results otherwise.

CareerTips.Com

A collection of links to both job posting and resource sites world-wide (including US opportunities). Broken down by specific country (Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, UK and US) and the catch-all: International. Specific country listings also offer links to additional informational and career/employment resource sites.

The Global Citizen

Companion website to Elizabeth Kruempelmann’s The Global Citizen: A Guide to Creating an International Life and Career. Includes links to assessment tools, work & volunteer opportunities, as well as some commercial services. Limited links and resources freely available.

Goinglobal

Not to be confused with this site, Goinglobal is primarily focused on selling country guides to individuals looking for employment. The link above is the job search page which allows you to search openings culled from the job postings of large multinationals (when you click on a job posting you are taken directly to the company’s human resources site). The Goinglobal home page provides limited, mainly excerpted, country and career information.

iHipo

Interesting combination of job & internship placements/postings and social networking site.

International Employment Gazette

Subscription-based job listing service - to access full listings and details of positions you need to subscribe to the service. Site does allow you to browse and preview some of the listing for free.

International Job Links

Colorful and rather simply presented collection of links to job posting sites by world region. Job sites are annotated with icons indicating currency of site, ability to post resume, language/s used, etc. Good site to get to regional job listings. Also lists sites that might be useful as career resources (though these seem much less useful than the job sites).

International Jobs

Limited number of job postings available -- most if not all seem to be culled from NGO, UN, and (quasi-)governmental websites. Most positions included are advanced positions requiring advanced standing and/or training.

International Jobs Center

A subscription service - employers pay to post but users also need to subscribe for full access to jobs database (student subscriptions offered at half the regular rate). Site offers free access to some postings, titled Hot Jobs This Week - most of these listings, though, are professional, career postings requiring substantial experience.

iWork

Part of the iAgora.com suite of internationally-focused websites, iWork links to opportunities for entry-level work and internships primarily (but not exclusively) in Europe. You must register with the site to apply for any listed site - this basic registration is free, though you need to be a “premium” member to view all the position openings listed through the site.

Job-Hunt.Org: International Online Job Search Resources

Links to many of the “usual suspects”; listings include annotations of varying length and usefulness.

Jobs Abroad

Part of a network of pages posting international opportunities, including InternAbroad, TeachAbroad, and VolunteerAbroad (all brought under the umbrella of the GoAbroad.com business). Search jobs by country or type. Typically there are few listings per country and most of them are at least a few months old. Site also offers links to other resources including what are called “dynamic” country guides: information compiled from the reports of people at work in the country. No registration is required though contact information is limited (you have to email any program of interest through the Jobs Abroad site).

Jobware

International arm of a German placement firm. A majority of the positions are based in Germany, with German firms, though not exclusively. Listings can be broadly or narrowly searched.

OverseasJobs.com

Limited postings drawn from a limited employer pool. Most of the positions require extensive experience and/or highly specialized skills.

QuintCareers.com

Lots of links (job listing sites by region) and the promise of a lot of freely accessible resources (including country guides and cv/resume help). There isn’t a lot of new or unique information and you have to click through a few pages to get to any substantive information. Uses pop-up advertisements! As good a starting point as any of the above, though the better University career center pages are best.
