General Information Sites & Guides

The links below might be of particular interest to the international job seeker - both in terms of background on the country or region of interest and in investigating the specific requirements for living and working in particular countries.

  • Country Studies, Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress
    http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html

Online versions of books originally published during the years 1988-1998. Some of the material will, naturally, be dated, and studies of many “important” countries (e.g. Canada, France, the UK) were never made due to the nature of the project. An exceptional resource for many of the “lesser-known” countries of the world. Well worth browsing and freely accessible.

  • Embassy.org
    http://www.embassy.org/
  • A privately-maintained service with a large number of commercial links to visa-procurement services and similar organizations. It also provides a comprehensive list of foreign embassies in the United States with full contact information - including email and web addresses - where available.

  • Executive Planet.com
    http://www.executiveplanet.com/

From the website: “guide to international business culture, customs, and etiquette, which covers many aspects of doing business worldwide.” Guides for approximately 40 countries. No resume/cv guides but some very useful information on terms of address, conversation, etc.

  • Online Newspapers: NewsVoyager.com & OnlineNewspapers.com

The above sites are portals to newspapers world-wide.

  • World Factbook
    http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/

Put together by the CIA, this is one of the premier online (and print) resources for general information on countries throughout the world. Includes maps, history, current statistics and census data, etc.
