UW-Madison Online Resources

The following links are to pages and sites with an international focus maintained by career centers and programs on campus. We have attempted to be as comprehensive as possible, but if you are aware of additional resources on campus servers not included below, or there is a problem with one of the links, please email us.

La Follette has developed an excellent set of career development pages geared to LaFollette students but of interest and use to others. The site includes: an extensive list of international organizations organized by field and including international employment links; internship summaries from 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004 La Follette interns; and links to additional databases and resources that include limited international content, including an internship opportunities page.

Also note that La Follette offers a Master of International Public Affairs degree program.

This page helps you frame your job search. The IS Major also hosts Job and Internship pages.

Outlines what is available through the BCC for students outside the School of Business (registering with BCC costs $25). Also includes links to freely accessible information, forms, and online resources available on the BCC website (and beyond).

Limited unique content. It does provide a list of books that might be of use in an international job hunt (two of which are available online) and links to general job search sites (with either an international focus or international sections). Also links to an often forgotten resource: worldwide newspaper and phonebook listings.

Provides a number of links to job listings in the environmental field. There are a few links scattered on the pages that might be of interest to someone wishing to pursue environmental work in the international arena.

International Employment
College of Engineering Career Services

Provides useful reminders and links to information on conducting an international job search, including important details such as residency requirements, insurance, IRS matters, foreign embassies, etc. Also links to both engineering-specific and general international job search sites.

The COE also published a short piece some years ago entitled “Students get the BIG PICTURE working abroad” that's now available online.

Though geared to students taking advantage of the program offered through the office, the website does have some interesting and useful information for both domestic students going abroad and international students coming to the United States, particularly with regard to adjusting to life away from home.

Provides an excellent overview of, information on and links to international resources and academic study on campus. Does not contain job or internship information.

CIBER coordinates a campus-wide, month-long program of panels, presentations, and meetings open to the entire University community. This is not an event to miss!! IOM is held every February.

The Exploration Center offers this workshop once or twice a semester to assist students considering an international career. Clicking on the above link will take you to the handouts from the February 2003 workshop (handouts provided do not substantially change semester to semester).

The International Studies Major has compiled a six page listing of Internet and print resources available to those interested in pursuing international opportunities. In pdf format.

See the selection of links to “International Teaching Opportunities” towards the bottom of the K-12 Job Search page.

Net Library
UW-Madison E-Book Collection

If you are on the campus-network you can link directly to the above collection. Though its offerings are limited, there are at least two titles available for reading online: Getting a Job Abroad and Opportunities in Overseas Careers. You will need to search for both titles (be sure to use “quotation marks” to bracket the title in the search) to access them.

This is a slideshow and audio presentation by John Bengel (in RealMedia format - approximately 35 minutes long) originally sponsored by CIBER and CREECA and now hosted on the International Institute’s website. Originally presented as part of International Opportunities Month (Februarry) 2002.

Though the Center does not maintain any pages specifically tailored to international careers, it does post some sample resumes crafted for the international market. The BCC has a small selection of international links in its BizCAREER Guide (alternate address). It also offers mentoring (with UW Business School alumni) and the ability to search opportunties listings with registration (open to all currently enrolled UW-Madison students).

The Business Career Center has online a copy of a handout available in the BCC Office: International Resources (pdf), a list of books available for browsing in the BCC office and a number of web links to jobs pages, sorted by country and region.

Work Abroad Handout
Wisconsin Union Travel Center

Though focused mainly on opportunities abroad for those still in school or, as noted on the page, in “low-pay, long-hours” types of jobs, this page provides a nice overviewfor those seeking an overseas position. Limited additional information can be found on the Center’s Work and Volunteer Abroad page. The Travel Center offers the unparalleled opportunity to discuss your overseas interests with members of its staff who have worked and travelled abroad through its Peer Advising service. We encourage you to contact the Center directly to set up an appointment. This is a great campus resource!

We have digitized two resources available from the Travel Center’s offices: the Work Abroad: Spain pamphlet and From Study Abroad to Work & Study Abroad (the last two pages of the Center’s “UW-Madison Study Abroad Made Simple” handout).
